Meanwhile, one industry that represents the popular devices says it’s taking safety seriously, but that some parents need to do more.
\nBetween 2013 and 2015, there was a 1,500 percent increase for children under 6 being poisoned by nicotine in e-cigarettes, according to a new study.<\/p>\n
The report says nearly half of the exposed children were under age 2.<\/p>\n
In coming up with his findings, Dr. Gary Smith with the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and his team analyzed calls to the National Poison Data System.<\/p>\n
More than 90 percent of the cases involved children swallowing the nicotine-laced liquid known as e-juice.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile the CEO of the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association says child protection is something his group takes seriously.<\/p>\n
Users are instructed to refill their devices away from children and store all e-cigarette products in a safe, childproof place. Adults are encouraged to handle the product with care.<\/p>\n
The FDA recently announced it will extend its authority over electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products.
