The Lexington Fire Department said they were called to the Oxford Circle Apartments, located off Oxford Circle and Versailles Road, just after 4 a.m. for a patient with difficulty breathing.<\/p>\n
When they arrived, they found a high level of flammable gas, methane and carbon monoxide at the complex, prompting an evacuation.<\/p>\n
The doors of over 30 apartment units were forced open, and structures were ventilated to ensure it was safe for crews to enter, according to the Lexington Fire Department.<\/p>\n
Fire officials say the leak is now under control.<\/p>\n
Nine people were treated for injuries sustained from the leak, and an adult male was killed.<\/p>\n
Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn says they believe the man died of carbon monoxide poisoning, and they are still determining whether an autopsy will be done. His name has not been released.<\/p>\n
Residents impacted by the leak are being allowed to gather at the Harvest Worship Center across the street from the complex.<\/p>\n
The City of Lexington says the situation is still under investigation, but they have been working all day to get hotels for the residents and find more permanent housing solutions.<\/p>\n
