Woodward’s list also included stabilization and repairs of erosion along the river bank near an existing water well. Cost estimates on any of the individual projects will cost the city over a million dollars based upon basic cost estimates of current projects that the city has received grant funding for.

Mayor David Pace told the council the process to get a grant to assist with projects is longer than what the bid estimates are good for due to rising costs of materials and labor depending upon the project. The City is currently facing that issue a with a proposed new water tower on Mooreman Road. Mayor Pace said city has received one million dollars of grant funds from when the original proposal was estimated and when the project was bided the cost came back at $2.1 million. Pace that the negotiations have been going for several months between several agencies and as of Monday night, the city still remains about $600,000 short of reaching a deal to secure the additional funding needed to move construction forward.

Mayor Pace reported to the council that State Representative Nancy Tate has a possible assistance on the erosion issue but in order to apply for the funds, a feasibility study has to be conducted which would cost the city about $100,000. Councilman Woodward said that he and other council members had several comments from the public in recent months wanting justifications for the recently approve occupational tax and other fund generating options to assist the city’s budget. It was noted by the council, no one from the public other than the media attended Monday’s meeting.

In other business, the Councilwoman Rhonda Allen awarded the July Yard of the Month Award to James Shacklette at the beginning of the meeting.
