Larry Walden, 69, of Cave City, was sentenced December 19 by U.S. District Judge Karen Caldwell after pleading guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to commit money laundering through crop insurance fraud.<\/p>\n
Federal prosecutors said Walden manipulated the federal crop insurance system from 2014 through 2023, falsely reporting crop losses on burley tobacco he was actually harvesting and selling.<\/p>\n
To support the fraudulent claims, Walden used fabricated financial records, fake checks, and falsified purchase receipts to make it appear he had bought tobacco from warehouses to meet production requirements.<\/p>\n
Court records show Walden conspired with Thomas Kirkpatrick, then-manager of Farmers Tobacco Warehouse in Boyle County, to obtain false documentation.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Walden also ran similar schemes through Greensburg Tobacco Market in Kentucky and Fair Deal Tobacco in Littleton, North Carolina, and sold tobacco under the names of relatives and neighbors to conceal production.<\/p>\n
Investigators determined Walden\u2019s actions resulted in $9,960,817.19 in losses to crop insurers. In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to repay that amount in restitution and will serve three years of supervised release following incarceration.<\/p>\n
Walden\u2019s sentencing marks the final case resolved in the broader conspiracy. Other defendants sentenced in the investigation include:<\/p>\n
Thomas Kirkpatrick, 67, of Stanford \u2014 former Farmers Tobacco Warehouse manager; 48 months in prison, two years of supervised release, and $16.1 million in restitution.
\nDavid Hunt, 63, of Campbellsville \u2014 42 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and $5.4 million in restitution.
\nTerry Wilson, 67, of Edmonton \u2014 time served, three years of supervised release, and $667,679 in restitution.
\nChristopher Wilson, 50 \u2014 18 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and $669,447 in restitution.
\nDavid Wisdom, 69, of Glasgow \u2014 48 months in prison, three years of supervised release, and $1.94 million in restitution.
\nRobert D. Birge Jr., 51, of Summer Shade \u2014 six months in prison, three years of supervised release, and $1.1 million in restitution.
\nHarlan Ray Highfield, 63, of Brooksville \u2014 sentenced earlier this month to 42 months in prison and $1.06 million in restitution in a related crop insurance fraud case.<\/p>\n
Under federal law, all defendants must serve at least 85 percent of their prison sentences.
