Danville dispatch received a 911 call around 9:30 p.m. on January 11 reporting a suicidal man with a knife at Center Estates Apartments, according to police.<\/p>\n
The caller told dispatch the man was claiming to be harming himself and had sent photos of his injuries to the caller through social media.<\/p>\n
Officers went to the apartment to check on the man\u2019s safety and breached the door in an attempt to provide aid. Police say they made contact with 29-year-old Cody Downey from outside the home and repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife.<\/p>\n
Instead, Downey exited the apartment holding the knife and charged toward officers, knocking one officer to the ground, according to police.<\/p>\n
An officer then fired his weapon, striking Downey in the chest. EMS transported him to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.<\/p>\n
The officer involved, a 10-year law enforcement veteran, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.<\/p>\n
Kentucky State Police is now investigating the shooting.
