The program allows individuals who make qualifying contributions to scholarship-granting organizations to receive tax benefits.<\/p>\n
Supporters say it would give Kentucky families more choices over their child\u2019s education. Opponents worry it would hurt public schools.<\/p>\n
On Monday, the House voted to override the bill, 77-14, with Republican District 63 Representative Kim Banta abstaining.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the Senate voted to override, 31-5, sending the bill to Secretary of State Michael Adams\u2019 desk.<\/p>\n
Beshear vetoed the bill on March 13 saying he was \u201cstanding with our people.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adams signed House bill 1 on Tuesday. In a social media post, Adams criticized Beshear\u2019s veto, saying that unlike Beshear, he welcomes \u201cthe chance to help Kentucky students get a better education through the federal American Opportunity Tax Credit program.\u201d
