On November 3, 2025, 47-year-old Michael Shawn Boaz of Clinton pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud and fraudulent prescriptions.<\/p>\n
United States Attorney Kyle Bumgarner said fraudsters like Boaz that steal from health care benefit programs negatively impact everyone\u2019s health care costs. He said they will continue to aggressively investigate and prosecute those that defraud the health care programs.<\/p>\n
Court documents showed Boaz and a co-conspirator fraudulently billed health care benefit programs for customers at two Kentucky pharmacies while working as licensed pharmacists. From 2017 to 2021, they caused almost $2.2 billion in losses to benefit providers by submitting claims for fraudulent and unauthorized prescriptions.<\/p>\n
Boaz added “boutique vitamins” to customer prescription orders and told them they were free. However, customers were billed anywhere between $1,000 to $6,000, according to prosecutors. He also submitted claims for the antihistamine Carbinoxamine Maleate.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Boaz had purchased Carbinoxamine Maleate from a wholesaler for $605 per prescription and billed health care providers between $2,000 and $16,000 for each fraudulent prescription.<\/p>\n
Boaz was sentenced to 30 months with three years supervised released.
