\nU.S. Attorney Kyle G. Bumgarner announced federal charges in four cases against seven defendants tied to alleged schemes to defraud Medicare and Kentucky Medicaid, part of the Department of Justice\u2019s 2026 National Health Care Fraud Takedown.<\/p>\n

In one case, a grand jury indicted Angela Renfro, Briana Gosnell, KLF Company LLC and Freedom Center LLC, all of Louisville, accusing them of conspiracy and health care fraud connected to billing for fraudulent, unauthorized and sometimes not-rendered services. Prosecutors allege more than $11 million in fraudulent claims were submitted to Kentucky Medicaid, with more than $10.7 million paid. Renfro and Gosnell also face aggravated identity theft charges tied to the alleged use of providers\u2019 National Provider Identifier numbers without permission.<\/p>\n

In a separate case, Dr. Christian Berkhahn of Louisville was charged by information with conspiracy to obtain controlled substances by fraud or deceit and health care fraud. Prosecutors allege he used his DEA number to order Schedule II controlled substances in others\u2019 names, including Cotempla and oxycodone, with the prescriptions allegedly paid for by Kentucky Medicaid.<\/p>\n

Another indictment charges Meredith Rachael Douglass, a Louisville registered nurse, with stealing controlled substances and making false statements relating to health care matters. Prosecutors allege she obtained drugs including fentanyl, hydromorphone and oxycodone through her job and falsified documentation after a patient had been discharged.<\/p>\n

A fourth case charges Einar Serrano Reyes of Florida with health care fraud and identity theft tied to a Louisville business, alleging false billing to Medicare for services not rendered.<\/p>\n

Federal prosecutors noted the charges are allegations and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
