On Sunday, June 28, police responded to the 4500 block of Bardstown Road around 5 a.m. on a report of a man who had been hit by a car.<\/p>\n
According to police, the man, later identified as 29-year-old Kevin Mutabazi, had been hit by a car that drove away. Then, a second vehicle hit the man while he was on the ground. The driver of the second vehicle stopped and called 911. Police said Mutabazi was not in a crosswalk when he attempted to cross the road.<\/p>\n
Mutabazi was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
On Friday, July 3, 26-year-old Aubrey Bald and his mother, 44-year-old Travonne Smith, were arrested in connection with the hit-and-run.<\/p>\n
During an interview with police, Bald said that he hit Mutabazi, left the scene and went to his house. He then said he told his mother,Travonne Smith, what had happened and left the car and keys at the house.<\/p>\n
According to the citation, Bald told police he then called 911 and made a false report that the vehicle had been stolen before the crash. He then said he contacted his uncle-in-law, the registered owner of the vehicle, to tell him it had been stolen.<\/p>\n
Police said that after investigating, they learned that after the car and keys were left at the house, Smith called Bald\u2019s grandmother, which led to the grandmother and Bald\u2019s uncles taking the car.<\/p>\n
The citation states that video evidence shows Smith picking up the uncles from their apartments after they destroyed the car and dumped it off at the intersection of Gellhaus Lane and Chenoweth Run Road.<\/p>\n
Bald is charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident\/failure to render aid\/assist with death or serious physical injury, one count of failure to report a traffic accident, and one count of making a false report of an incident to law enforcement.<\/p>\n
Smith is charged with one count of tampering with physical evidence and one count of obstruction\/interference with an officer.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, July 4, Bald was arraigned in court, and bond was set at $150,000 full cash, with Bald to have no contact with the victim\u2019s family and no driving. He is being held in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.<\/p>\n
Smith\u2019s arraignment is scheduled for August 25.
