The operation targeted illegal weapon pipelines across Louisville, focusing primarily on the Russell and Park DuValle neighborhoods through crime data analysis. Led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the Louisville Metro Police Department and Shively Police Department, undercover agents conducted controlled weapon purchases across 100 meetings.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe mission was simple and twofold,\u201d U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner said in a news conference Monday. \u201cFirst: Build criminal cases against the people driving violence in the city of Louisville. Second, and just as important: Get as many firearms as possible out of the hands of those violent criminals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Officials reported at least 12 of the 160 seized firearms were stolen, while several had been illegally modified. Many were previously linked to violent crimes.<\/p>\n
According Bumgarner, the 52 defendants indicted on federal and state charges have a combined criminal record of 200 prior felony convictions, including 14 for homicide.<\/p>\n
ATF Special Agent in Charge John Nokes said their team also seized more than 20 pounds of illegal drugs, primarily fentanyl and methamphetamine.
