Authorities responded to the Glenwood Apartments in Cave City Monday after they got a call from a resident there asking police to determine whether an item he had purchased could still be dangerous.

Cave City Police Chief Paul Reynolds said officers learned the man had purchased the device at a flea market one to two years ago. Reynolds described the device as a “tank shell.”

Chief Reynolds said it was probably 4-foot tall like a massive bullet.

Reynolds said the man wanted to know whether the device was stable. Officers responded, took pictures and sent them to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms (ATF) and Explosives for review.

An Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit from Fort Campbell later responded to the apartment complex.

Reynolds said the device was determined to contain explosive material and was seized by authorities.

There was a controlled detonation done on the outskirts of town Monday afternoon, according to Cave City police. There was no immediate danger and the operation was conducted by trained explosive ordinance disposal personnel.
