\nKentucky Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles is leading a new effort to combat hunger.<\/p>\n
Quarles revealed the members of a statewide Hunger Task Force and discussed its mission on Thursday at Gallrein Farms outside Shelbyville.<\/p>\n
Quarles says hunger exists across Kentucky. He wants the task force to study the sources of hunger and identify successful anti-hunger programs that can be applied elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Tamara Sandberg, executive director of the Kentucky Association of Food Banks, says hunger is a “hidden but serious problem.” She says it goes against Kentucky values to let people go hungry.<\/p>\n
Task force members include farmers, business and faith leaders and representatives of farm groups.<\/p>\n
A study by Feeding America showed that 17 percent of Kentucky’s population is struggling to avoid hunger, or nearly three-quarters of a million people.
