Kentuckians are continuing to receive these calls and need to be reminded that IRS scammers don’t stop once tax season has ended.

The Office of the Attorney General receives multiple calls each week throughout the year from consumers that have been a victim of the IRS scam.

Beshear said the scam often involves a phony IRS agent who calls from a Maryland phone number claiming a criminal complaint was filed against the consumer for fraudulent tax returns.

The fake agent threatens an immediate appearance before a court unless the consumer resolves the issue for a fee, and is instructed to make payments via gift cards, money-wire transfers and bank account deposits.

Consumers are told not to tell anyone about their tax issues or the phone calls because they are to follow the “Electronic Communication Privacy Act” guidelines.

The IRS scam is a nationally prevalent scam. The IRS has issued multiple alerts over the last several years warning of this scam, and there are thousands of victims and millions of dollars that have been fraudulently obtained.

To avoid the IRS agent scam, follow these quick tips:
Do not rely on the number on your caller ID, or any phone number provided by the caller.
If you owe federal taxes, or think you might, hang-up and call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040. IRS workers can help you with your payment questions.
To report this scam or other scams, log on to the Attorney General’s website or call 502-696-5389.

Attorney General Andy Beshear issued a scam alert after a woman in Elizabethtown was defrauded out of more than $50,000 in an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Scam, from someone claiming to be an IRS agent.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[59

post-6460","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-news","entry
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
