Kentucky State Po\u00aclice Trooper Joseph Cam\u00acer\u00acon Ponder, originally of Rineyville, was fatally shot September 13, 2015, on a portion of the highway while conducting a traffic stop.<\/p>\n
The dedication ceremony, hosted by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and KSP, will be at 2 p.m. CDT June 22 at the Lyon Convention Center at Lee S. Jones Park in Eddyville.<\/p>\n
A sign will designate I-24 from the Caldwell County line to Ky. 293 in Lyon County as the \u201cTrooper Joseph Cameron Ponder Memorial Highway\u201d and it will be unveiled at the ceremony.<\/p>\n
The designation was proposed by Senator Stan Humphries and approved by the Kentucky state legislature.<\/p>\n
Humphries, representatives from the Kentucky State Police and the Transportation Cabinet will speak at the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Upon receiving his commission to Kentucky State Police in January 2015, 31 year-old Ponder was assigned to Post 1 in Mayfield, where his death came only nine months into his career.<\/p>\n
Recently, his hometown dedicated the Rineyville Heroes Memorial in the memory of Ponder, KSP Sgt. David Gibbs and U.S. Army 1st Lt. Eric Yates.<\/p>\n
The three men memorialized in granite grew up in the Rineyville area, playing sports and attending Rineyville Ele\u00acmentary School, and died while serving others and the country.<\/p>\n
The memorial cost about $27,000 to build and the money was raised by community members.<\/p>\n
Ponder was also a U.S. Navy veteran.
