The banks of the Ohio River has seen several historical events and another could be on the horizon if some community leaders plans come together.

The Confederate Monument in Louisville is a 70-foot-tall monument adjacent to and surrounded by the University of Louisville Belknap Campus in Louisville. The monument has become in the spotlight in late April, when Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and University of Louisville James Ramsey announced plans to take down the 124 year old monument and either move it or store it along with other historical facades of the city’s heritage. Efforts were blocked by Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge. It could be another week before a circuit court judge issues a final ruling on whether the city of Louisville can move the Confederate statue near University of Louisville.

As that action hinges in the balance, the City of Brandenburg is making plans to offer the monument a new home if a removal order is given. Mayor Ronnie Joyner and others in a group of citizens working a grass roots effort to the move the monument to the Brandenburg Riverfront. Local historian, Gerry Fischer explained to the Brandenburg City Council Monday (6/3) night, how the city has several historical ties to the monument including the famous John Hunt Morgan’s Raid. The raid came down Main Street as the Confederacy pushed north and crossed the Ohio River at Brandenburg.

If Louisville’s controversial Confederate Statue is located to Brandenburg, the idea spot is to move it to the Brandenburg Riverfront Park, which is the approximate site of Morgan’s Crossing and would compliment the already established outdoor museum which has monuments depicting Brandenburg and Meade County’s early settlement years including the “Hunt For the Flint” statue, a tribute to Native American history added the park in 2002, and the “Freedom” statue, a tribute to the Underground Railroad added in 2004. The statues were a part of the river front development plan a partnership between the City of Brandenburg and Meade County Museum and Arts Council.

Fischer said that the Louisville monument would be appropriate with the history of the region and state. Local leaders believe that the monument could boost local tourism and regenerate plans for the downtown area.

Local leaders have talked with Louisville Greg Fischer about the matter. Brandenburg will have to wait for an answer. Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer says he will not decide the statue’s fate until he gets the final green light from the courts.

A subject that began as a tv news story in one river town has become a topic of conversation in a smaller river a few miles down stream.
