\nAn ambulance was struck by lightning Sunday afternoon while on the scene of a one vehicle accident in Grayson County.<\/p>\n

Just after 2 p.m. the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident at the 114 mile marker of the eastbound side of the Western Kentucky Parkway where 54-year old Rita Sanders of Leitchfield was going east on the Western Kentucky Parkway when she hydroplaned due to the rain. Her car went off the right side of the road and came to rest down an embankment. Sanders complained of head and neck pain; she was wearing her seat belt, but the air bags were deployed.<\/p>\n
Paramedic Benny Baxter and EMT Blake Schroerlucke were loading Sanders from the crash into the back of an ambulance when lightning struck the ambulance, causing the two to fall to the ground. The deputy sheriff was about a foot away from the stretcher and the lightning strike pushed him forward.<\/p>\n
Dispatch was advised of the situation and two more ambulances were dispatched to the scene.<\/p>\n
Both EMS crew members were treated at Twin Lakes ER and released approximately two hours later.<\/p>\n
Sanders suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Her vehicle had moderate damage.<\/p>\n
Clarkson Fire Department and Leitchfield Fire Department were also on scene.
