The Meade County Board of Education looked toward the future during their regular meeting Tuesday night (1/12). Board members began the meeting with discussion related to the planned renovations to the Area Technology Center.
The Board got to see the first draft of renderings of the new expansion and renovation of the facility designed by Sherman Carter Barnhart. Board members approved a payment of $68,336.56 for architectural services on the design. A two story addition facing Old State Road will be added to the existing building and feature a connection to the high school building. The plans have been submitted to the state for pending approval. If all processes go well, ground breaking on the project could be as early as this May with completion by August 2017.
Kellianne Wilson explained and showed samples of a approach for students to select their classes for the upcoming school year. Work is underway to help guide students onto a career direction that will work in conjunction with the Area Technology Center Class offerings to ensure that students are prepared for college or the workforce upon graduation.
Parents of 8th graders at Stuart Pepper Middle School will start to see some of the changes as Wilson and High School Principal Marc Adams will be talking with students about their needed classes which begin to encompass the remainder of their high school career. The new process is expected to expand to all middle to high school grade levels within the next two years. Among the changes would be to align classes to a six period day instead of the current seven period class schedule.
The board acknowledged a rough draft of the proposed fiscal year budget as required by the state. Finance Officer Susan Fackler said that the draft basically the current year budget except for the construction fund revenue. She expects to a have more exact budget to the board in May.
The board approved several fundraising projects for various groups and clubs along with field trips for the Wrestling Team and FBLA. They also approved their dates for the regular monthly meeting for the calendar year of 2016.
