
The Ekron City Commission discussed city mowing and cleanup during their regular meeting Tuesday (4/5) evening.
Commissioners Joyce McHolan and Corey Trent discussed the business with Mayor Gwynn Ison. The city wide Spring Cleanup will be held on April 23 beginning at Noon located at the pavilion. Mayor Ison encourage residents of Ekron to cleanup the property and the right of ways to help curb appeal of the town. A dumpster will be placed at the end of Willie Dowell Drive for residents to use to get rid of unwanted items and trash. The Ekron Fire Department Women’s Auxiliary will also help with the effort as the city will provide a donation to the group for their help.
In Other business, the commission discussed and took no action on the previously tabled items of repairs to the city tractor and tree trimming along West Alley Street. Mayor Ison said the trimming project would be taken care by Meade County RECC and would not be a cost to the city. The topic of the tractor repairs remained tabled due to the absence of Commissioner Rob Wilkins.
Commissioners presented discussed and delayed any action regarding mowing contracts for the city. Action on the issue is expected at their May meeting. Commissioner Corey Trent suggested that the city purchase a weed trimmer that has other interchangeable cutters to assist with the mowing and trimming efforts. Mayor Ison’s motion to make the $250 purchase was unanimously approved the commission. The commission voted to transfer $1,200 from the Street and Sidewalks fund to the Utility fund of the budget.
Mayor Ison said that she had been made aware of a growing problem of young people on the city streets late at night. She said the city’s curfew ordinance will be upheld. Individuals who are caught breaking the curfew could face a fine or jail time as a result of their action. The late activity comes in the wake of incidents were local teens and young adults gathered at the pavilion and fought among themselves which resulted in a couple of arrests. Vandalism also has increased in the city park and around town as well. Copies of the curfew ordinance may be send to the City of Ekron, P.O. Box 100, Ekron Kentucky 40117.
