
The Brandenburg City Council discussed water during their regular meeting Monday night. The council heard information related to a possible change of chemicals used to water in the city’s water system.
Brad Montgomery and Joseph Pavoni of GRW Enginners who explained to the council the difference between Chlorine and Chloramine water disinfectant treatments. The city currently uses the Chlorine treatment and is looking into the possibility of changing the Chloramine method to be competitive is selling water to other water systems.
The change could be required to in order to keep the Meade County Water District as a water customer. The Water District currently purchases about forty percent of their water supply from the City of Brandenburg and the remaining sixty percent from Hardin County Water District Number 1. The Hardin County Water District will be converting to Cloramine treatment as it plans to purchase water from the Louisville Water Company, who uses that method of disinfectant.
After a lengthy discussion, the council voted to table the issue to allow them more time to review the information and costs involved if they chose to make the transition. Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that a special called meeting would likely be schedule to discuss the issue further.
In other business, the council heard from David Pace, Industrial Authority Chairman, who reported that all of the lots in the fifty acre Bill Corum Industrial Park have been sold. Pace said that the park has 198 full time jobs and 40 monthly part-time jobs that results in over $5 million of economic impact in the city.
Council members approved a list of streets to begin paving work around the city. The list includes: Lakeview Drive between Broadway to the intersection near Oaklawn; Hill Street between Lafayette Street to Highway 448; Pike Lane; Debbie Court; Leon Court and Jenna Court. The complete cost of the paving is estimated at $84,000.
Council members approved a list of items of to be declared as a surplus property to be auctioned. The city along with the county and chamber of commerce have applied for a grant to revitalize the boat ramp in the Brandenburg Riverfront Park. Mayor Joyner said that he is working on finalizing a cost list related to adding ten RV hookups in the park.
Public Works Director TJ Hughes reported that crews are in the process of flushing fire hydrants. He reported that a few hydrants had been broken and will have to be replace. He also reported that the final connections will be made in a couple of weeks to bring the outdoor warning siren into working order.
The council voted to increase the base pay for next term of city council members from $100 to $200. The increase will take effect in January 2017. Mayor Joyner announced this Saturday will be large item pickup in the city.
