
The Meade County Board of Education met during a special called meeting Thursday night to work through their regular business items.
The board heard an update from representatives of Sherman Carter Barnhart regarding the design of the Area Technology Center renovation project. The plans call for an addition to built onto the east side of the building with a adjusted parking area to interface with new entrance to the building. Designers are working with local leaders with the school and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College System to craft the lab areas to fit the specific needs of each trade to be offered at the Area Technology Center.
The building currently has a 65 energy use index rating which designers are aiming to reduce that figure to around 45 EUI once the project is completed. The input into the work flow of the labs in each department will allow for “relative experience” instead of a general class style. Designers anticipate construction to begin in July on the project. The board approved a payment of $13,667.31 to the firm for architectural services on the project.
In other business, the school board approved an amendment to the current school calendar to update snow days missed and the non-traditional learning days used. The last day for students will be on Thursday, May 19 with graduation to be held at 8 pm on Friday, May 20 at Hamilton Field.
The board approved the annual Title IX report for the district. Billy Adams said the district meets full accommodations for high school athletics and could be look further into the feasibility of expressed interests of offering Boys Bass Fishing and Girls Field Hockey.
Superintendent Dr. John Millay reported to the board that the district has received positive response from the state on the non-traditional instructional plan. He said that school leaders used the days wisely not to exhaust the resource and the periodic use during the winter events put the district in good positioning. School leaders will look into some adjustments of the learning packets for better timing with on going lessons for next year.
Terry Lancaster, Food Services Director reported to the board that free breakfast and lunches will be offered to all elementary school students in the district during the 2016-17 school year. The effort is a one year pilot program and if it is successful will transition into a four year program for the students. Meal prices for the Middle and High School students will increase by ten cents unrelated to the pilot program.
The board approved bidding on supplies and services for maintenance and resources for the district.
