Members of Meade County Fiscal Court was updated on several efforts during their regular monthly meeting Tuesday (5/10) night.
Magistrates heard from Paul Sanders of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet regarding the proposal of use of the Rural Secondary Road funds. Sanders said that funding was down a little from last year resulting in about six tenths of a mile less of being paved. Among the projects funded for the summer include: 2.105 miles of Kentucky 144 from Pollocks Road to Kentucky 259; 4.109 miles of Kentucky 228 from Mile Marker 7 to Kentucky 1047; 2 miles of Kentucky 1844 from Kentucky 144 to Mile Marker 2; and 0.806 miles of Kentucky 2727 from Kentucky 1726 to Kentucky 144. The total cost of the resurfacing projects is $1,202,549. Resurfacing this summer is also planned for a portion of State Roads 710 and 228.
Information Technology Manager Joe Mangin updated the court on recent upgrades to the county’s computer network and said that network security is a increased risk as Ransom Ware is becoming a common infection issue. The Ransom Ware is a virus that is planted via a computer user typically opening an attachment which has the file contained that locks away all of your information until the user pays a certain amount to regain use of their computer and files. Mangin said ransom ware had typically been targeting banks and medical facilities but has recently targeted law enforcement agencies, jails, court systems and small governments. He asked county leaders to look into a monitoring program to help add another layer of network protection.
The court approved the reappointments of Edward Pike to the Payneville Fire Department Board, Mona Jarboe to the Battletown Fire Department Board, and Mickey Chism to the Property Valuation Board of Appeals. They also approved the second reading of the Meade County Detention Center budget amendment along with the first reading of the an ordinance to update purchasing allowances by the Kentucky Model Procurement Code. They also approved the first reading of the proposed 2016-17 operating budget.
Magistrates approved the job opening of a full time paramedic at in the EMS department. They also heard an update from Tourism Director Carol Logsdon on the work of upcoming events and the ongoing efforts to draw tourist into the county. Logsdon said that the she is using more online advertising and social media over print media to bring awareness to the many event offerings of the county.
