
The Brandenburg City Council met during their regular monthly meeting Monday (6/13) night.
The council heard the first readings of a ordinance which amends the current fiscal year budget that ends on June 30. They also reviewed and heard the first reading of the proposed 2016-17 fiscal year budget. Associated with the proposed budget included a two percent rate in crease for city water and sewer fees. City customers within the city limits will see a bump of twenty three cents for the first 2,00 gallons used at a minimum fee of $11.68, while water customers outside of city limits will see a minimum bill of $18.01. Sewer rates will see a thirty cent increase in rates with customers inside city limits will pay a minimum bill of $15.11 while those of outside of the city will pay $16.07 for the first 2,000 gallons. The city council will have a special called meeting for the second reading of the ordinances Wednesday at 5 pm at Brandenburg City Hall.
In other business, the council approved purchasing two cds for the future purchase of radio read water meters. One of the $20,000 cd’s will be purchased during the current fiscal year and the second will be purchased during the next fiscal year. Council members approved the lowest bid for a new utility truck for the public works department. Ray’s Ford submitted the lowest bid on a 2017 Ford three quarter ton truck at a cost of $30,698.30.
Mayor Ronnie Joyner asked the council to hire John Chism and one other person as temporary city employees to build a new planned sidewalk along High Street from city Hall to near the Bypass. After some discussion, the council voted to approve the request.
Police Chief Scotty Singleton reported that the “Citizens On Patrol” (COP) program had a updated car. He said that the new members of the program stepped up and has provided volunteer hours and he provided them a newly striped car. The car is a silver 2002 Ford Focus that has a similar logo pattern to the city police department but is yellow. Chief Singleton said that the program is now ten years old and the update marks the renewed growth of the program which now has twelve volunteers.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported that all of the planned spring paving has been completed and new mulch has been put in place in both of the playgrounds. New sidewalks have been completed in the Riverfront Park from the Gazebo to the entrance to Buttermilk Falls.
