The Brandenburg City Council met during their regular monthly meeting Monday night which provided council input on several items.
The council first presented the Yard of The Month award to Terry and Peggy Cain of Park Lane. Mayor Ronnie Joyner presented funding to the John Coates President of the Meade County Senior Citizens Center. The council heard from Stanley Bennett of the Moose Lodge regarding repair on the side walk in front of their building. Mayor Joyner said that the best solution would be to remove the steps and replace it with a gradual slope. Work is expected to begin in a couple of weeks.
In departmental reports, City Clerk Amy Haynes said the city had received 85 credit card payments and issued seven building permits and three sign permits. Police Chief Scotty Singleton reported that the police department passed two sections of a compliance audit by the Department of Criminal Justice training.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported that the American Queen will be making a stop in Brandenburg for water and trash operations on Friday. The steamboat will make another stop for water on July 20. Councilwoman Maggie Love voiced several concerns related to improvements to the city’s Riverfront Park. She said that worked needed to be done to the gazebo along with mowing and trimming efforts along the back shore line along Flippins Run Park. She said the growth does not allow hardly any view of the river. Mayor Joyner said that the issues will be looked into.
Mayor Joyner informed the council off issues with the sewer lift station on Donna Drive. The city has received complaints about sewer back up in some houses and it has been determined that the lift station is not deep enough to handle the flow if power is interrupted from the pump. The mayor said that the station needs to be re-drilled
to additional 12 foot depth with a couple inch wider diameter. The extra space would allow 3,000 gallons of storage.
Mayor Joyner said that the estimated cost of the project would be about $119,000. In order to get the work done, Mayor Joyner said that he would like to declare an emergency situation, which would allow the project not go through the bidding process. No action was taken on the issue by the council.
Mayor Joyner informed the council that the state alcohol laws are set to change to allow alcohol sales after midnight and on Sundays across the state regardless of the population. He suggested to the council to start thinking about how they want to proceed on the issue and be ready to discuss a draft ordinance amendment at the August meeting.
