The Ekron City Commission met during a special called meeting Tuesday (11/15) evening to discuss several crime related issues.
Commissioners discussed and approved a motion to work to form a city wide neighborhood watch program. The city continues to wrestle with an increase in crime from thefts to vandalism and city leaders are considering ways to resolve the situation.
City leaders had asked the Meade County Sheriff Department for help in implementing a program which resulted in no success. City leaders plan to reach out to the sheriff’s department again in hopes of a igniting a solid structured program to report crime in the city. Commissioner Corey Trent said that if this attempt doesn’t work a grass roots developed system will be pursued.
Commissioners are also dealing vandalism to a number of street signs and damage to the city pavilion. The city is working to gather information of a city wide camera network to monitor the city streets and problem areas around the clock.
Commissioners also discussed the possibility of adding speed bumps in various locations around town to slow down traffic that cruses through town at least double or triple times the posted speed limits. Commissioner Trent said that the uptick in crime is due the lack of police patrol in the town along with the confined ability of the elected constable.
The commission is set to revisit the agenda items during their next regular meeting on January 3, 2017.
