A once in a lifetime event occurred Wednesday (11/30) morning in downtown Brandenburg.
Crews began work of permanently setting the first layer of block pieces of the Confederate Monument. Work paused for a few moments around 11 am, as city and county officials brought the local time capsule to the site to be embedded into the foundation of the statue. Unlike the original time capsule in Louisville, most of the items represent the current day way of life in the monuments new home of Brandenburg.
Over one hundred individual items ranging from documents about the design and history of the monument to everyday use items were placed into three capsules. The larger of the three capsules were for larger items and it was placed in a insert in the concrete foundation of the base while the two smaller capsules were placed in the original vault area of the monument. All three capsules were sealed with concrete during the brief gathering.
The capsules were made of plastic pipe and was sealed an epoxy then wrapped in plastic bags to preserve the items from moisture and years of storage. Brandenburg Mayor Ronnie Joyner and Meade County Judge Executive Gerry Lynn lowered the the capsule into it’s final resting place with an unknown date of future discovery if ever.
The time capsule is located in the left front corner under the first block of the base of the monument. The monument will have to be taken completely down in order to retrieve the time capsule. Construction crews expect to have the monument’s move completed by the end of next week. Local leaders are planning a dedication ceremony in the spring of 2017, after site work is completed around the monument.
Notable items of the capsule include:
