The agenda was short but the topics were expansive during the regular monthly meeting of Meade County Fiscal Court Tuesday (2/14) night.
The meeting began with comments from Dalton Janzen regarding garbage collection during winter weather conditions. He told county leaders that he believed that the residents were not getting the proper service that they pay for from Santek Waste Services, the company that currently collects trash for the county. He said that the some residents had to wait up two weeks before their trash was collected because of the company didn’t run additional routes to keep the schedules on track during such events.
John McConnell, General Manager of Santek Waste Services, spoke to the concerns of Janzen and others, who have made complaints during the past few months. He said that the crews work to attempt to make the trash collections but road conditions and DOT rules impact how fast they can get the makeup routes finished. McConnell said that he is working with the local solid waste staff to explore ways to getting updated pickup information out to customers. He urged customers who have issues to report them to the company’s office.
Paul Sanders, Engineer with Transportation Cabinet District 4 office, presented magistrates with planned Rural Secondary Funds In the amount of $1,192,796. The planned use of the funds are to allow $502,800 for routine maintenance; $3,862 for the Judge Executive’s discretion; and resurfacing of three state roads in the western and southern areas of the county. Planned roads for resurfacing include a one and half mile section of Kentucky 941 between US 60 and Goins Lane. A four mile section of Kentucky 261 from the Meade/Breckinridge County Line to Highway 79 and 3 miles section of Kentucky 144 from Highway 259 to Kentucky 230. The plans is expected to resurface about 9 miles of roadway.
Sanders also announced other funding has been placed for resurfacing of Main Street, a portion of Kentucky 228 and 31W from the County line to intersection of Highway 1638. He said work on the remaining portion of the Kentucky 313 project should be completed by the end of August with a traffic signal to be installed at the intersection of 448 and 1638.
In other business, the court approved County Road Department to move forward to seek bids on two new dump trucks. expected delivery is anticipated to around six to eight months. Magistrates approved hiring to fill a part position at the County E911 Center, and positions at EMS and Road Department. Court members met during a brief closed session to discuss personnel issue and return to approve an adjustment of the pay scale for the acting Solid Waste Coordinator.
