
Members of Meade County Fiscal Court worked through a lengthy agenda Tuesday (3/14) night.
At the beginning of the meeting, magistrates recognized the members of the Meade County High School Boys Basketball team for their accomplishment of winning the Third Region Championship and are the first local team to compete in the State High School Basketball Tournament since 1984. Judge Executive Gerry Lynn read and signed a proclamation which was presented to the team and coaching staff.
During the business session, the court accepted excess fees from the County Clerk and Sheriff. Meade County Clerk Judy Jordan presented Fiscal Court with $150,964.49 in excess fees collected at her office during the past fiscal year. Chief Deputy Jason Graham presented excess fees in the amount of $1,514.47 collected by sheriffs department during the past year.
The court voted 4 to 2 to approve a 39 cent rate increase by Santek Waste Services for trash collection in the county. According to discussion by magistrates, the increase notice came a day after Santek General Manager John McConnell attended the February meeting to discuss complaints from residents related to how the company handled weather impacted trash routes among other concerns. Several magistrates expressed their concern for the bad timing for such a request. Judge Executive Lynn said the increase was based upon the consumer price index which is allowed by the contract between the county and Santek. The increase will take monthly trash rates from $18.50 a month to $18.89 a month or $56.67 quarterly. Magistrates Tim Goddard and Billy Sipes voted against the increase proposal.
Judge Executive Lynn read a letter support from Muldraugh Mayor Joseph Noon, for an appointment to fill the remainder of the term of First District Constable. The seat was held by Henry Bailey, who passed away on January 16. Fiscal Court members unanimously approved David Greer, Jr to fill the vacancy. The court noted the resignation of Rob Pack from the Planning and Zoning Commission and delayed further action until the April meeting.
Magistrates approved permission for Judge Executive Lynn to advertise for the positions of a part time Planning and Zoning Administrator and a laborer position at the Solid Waste and Recycling Center.
County leaders approved a special election in the Guston voting precinct to allow alcohol sales. The special election will be held on Tuesday, May 23 from 6 AM until 6 PM at Ekron Elementary School to only voters in the Guston precinct to cast their vote on the issue. The special election will the county an estimated 4 to 5 thousand dollars to conduct.
Fiscal Court voted to change the location of their April regular meeting. Judge Executive Lynn asked the court to move next month’s regular meeting to the Flaherty Fire Department to allow residents in southern and eastern corners of the county have a convenient access to their local government.
