

The Brandenburg City Council recognized local high school athletic achievements during their regular meeting Monday (4/10) night.
Mayor Ronnie Joyner read and presented proclamations to Meade County High School Wrestler Bryan Pratt and Meade County High School Wrestling Coach Bob Davis. Pratt a sophomore student at Meade County High School earned the 2016/17 KHSAA Wrestling State Championship title which the is the first for the school. Head Coach Bob Davis help start the wrestling program at Meade County High School was recognized by city leaders for his efforts and guidance to help the program make this achievement. Pratt and Davis was joined by family and friends for the presentation.
City leaders also previously presented a proclamation to the Boys High School basketball team during a community pep rally in March for the success as Third Region Champions and the first team since 1983 to advance on to the Boys State Basketball tournament.
In other business, the council discussed a upcoming budget amendment to the parks and recreation line item of the current fiscal year. Mayor Joyner said that the $50,000 line item is currently over budget from the unforeseen adoption of the Confederate Monument and work at Nichol Park. He said that those expenses along with the normal expenses to maintain the park remainder of the current fiscal year would show the budget line about $30,000 over the original funds. Mayor proposed to amend the line item when the entire budget is amended to prepare the city fiances for the new fiscal year that begins on July 1.
Police Chief Scotty Singleton reported to the council that plans for a major update on the county radio system are underway which will improve radio communications for the his department. The Meade County Fiscal Court approved last month the purchase of a new system which implement a simulcast of the radio transmissions across the county. The system will include a radio repeater in Brandenburg that will help ease dead zones for emergency personnel. The city will be asked to help pay a percentage of the cost of the over all upgrade along with other departments who use the county owned system. Mayor Joyner told the council the exact percentage has yet to be determined and will be presented to the council in the future.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported that crews are fire hydrant flushing is about half completed and encouraged residents to check their water for discoloration before using the water for laundry. He also presented two bids for a new commercial lawn mower to replace a 2009 model which has been determined end of life. He said the difference was $12 between the two bids received from Wright Implement and Bluegrass Lawn & Garden. The council took no action of the possible purchase.
