
The Brandenburg City Council worked through a short agenda Monday (5/8) evening during their regular meeting.
Council members voted Councilman Bruce Fackler as Mayor Pro-tem, to preside over the meeting in the absence of Mayor Ronnie Joyner. Council members asked Police Chief Scotty Singleton about the recent uptick in misdemeanor arrests in the city. Chief Singleton explained the report provided to the council included arrests of shoplifting to burglary cases. Singleton said drugs arrests are due to the increase of methamphetamine activity. The council approved a list of items as surplus property from the police department. The items will be sold at a public auction which will be announced at a later date.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported hydrate flushing was completed with a few minor repairs needed to prevent a few hydrants from freezing during the winter. He also reported the new electric and water lines have been installed at the Confederate Monument site and work is planned this week to pour concrete for side walks around the base of the monument. Work is stalled until a lift truck can be found to relocate the downtown outdoor siren to the west hill overlooking downtown.
Council Member Maggie Love updated the council on the plans for the Confederate Monument dedication. The ceremony is scheduled on Monday, May 29 beginning at 2 pm in the parking lot at the end of main street. Organizers are planning time period music with a several speakers and brief reception planned just following the ceremony. A brief interruption in traffic is expected close to the ceremony times to limit traffic during the ceremony. Those wanting to visit the Riverfront Park or the ceremony need to plan their activities and travel in or out of the park accordingly as the lower section of Main Street and River Road will be closed between 1:45 until around 3 pm for the event.
