
The Brandenburg City Council heard the first reading of ordinances pertained to the 2017-18 fiscal year budget during their regular monthly meeting Monday (6/12) night.
In a statement of the proposed budget from Mayor Ronnie Joyner which was read to the council, the proposed capital purchases in the upcoming budget include the purchase of a new maintenance truck, resurfacing of the parking lot in the Brandenburg Riverfront Park, sidewalks along Howard Drive and the completion of the downtown RV park. The proposed budget of $2.2 million dollars also reflects a two percent increase in water and sewer rates for the increase of operational expenses.
The Brandenburg City Council will have the second reading of the proposed budget during a special called meeting at 12 Noon Wednesday (6/14) at Brandenburg City Hall.
In other business, the council approved adding Meade County Fiscal Court to the property deed for the plot of ground that the Confederate Monument sits upon. County and city leaders formed a 60-40 partnership on the ownership and up keep of the monument. Council members approved the appoint of Bric Pace a city representative to the County Board of Assessment Board of Appeals. They also approved Bryan Claycomb to fill the remaining term of Kitty Smith on the Industrial Authority Board. Smith submitted her letter of resignation. Council approved the reappointment of David Pace for another term on the Industrial Authority.
Mayor Joyner informed the council work will move forward on a new water tower along Lawrence Street after it has been determined the proposed design will work for the city’s system. He also announced that the city is set to receive a $222,240 Transportation Alternative Program grant for sidewalk repairs in downtown Brandenburg. The grant requires the city to match twenty percent of the funding.
Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported to the council that mosquito spraying has begun in the city when weather conditions allow.
