Members of the Muldraugh City Council finally wrestled discussion to gain a first reading of a proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year during a special called meeting.
With all members present except Councilman Corey Dresel, the council unanimously approved a ordinance to balance and amend the current fiscal year budget. Then council members took up continued discussion about the proposed 2017-18 city budget. Councilmen Russell Cowins and Robert Mattingly voiced opposition to the proposed two percent rate increase for water and sewer rates. The increase was intended to fund improvements for the water infiltration system. Cowins said he had several complaints expressed to him on the idea. It was generally decided to drop the sixty cent increase.
The discussion turned to Mayor Joseph Noon’s letter that accompanied the proposed budget. Councilmen Cowins and Jerry Noel didn’t approve of the use of the word “hope” in the letter as term lacked setting a time line for projects. Mayor Noon explained that the term “hope” was intended as if the council grant funds to accomplish the projects outlined in the letter during the upcoming budget cycle.
After a total of 50 minutes, the council finally approved the first reading of a proposed $1.2 million budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year that should start on July 1. The council expects to conduct the second reading of the budget during a special called meeting on Tuesday, June 27 at 6:30 pm.
