
The Brandenburg City Council tabled action on filling a vacancy on the council during their regular meeting Monday (7/10) night.
Council member Bill Basham submitted his resignation from the city council during a special called meeting on July, 14. The council has thirty days to appoint someone to fill the vacant term. At the end of the June Regular meeting Former Councilman Basham informed the council of his intention related to his retirement from the Meade Sheriff’s Department as a court bailiff. He offered a suggestion to appoint D.J. Benham, as his replacement on the council.
During Monday night’s meeting, Council members Maggie Love and Chris Hulsey were absent due to other obligations leave a three member quorum to conduct business. Council members Patsy Lusk and Bruce Fackler voiced to table the issue until all of the council members were able to meet and discuss possible nominations for the vacancy. The City Council will have a special called meeting on Friday, July 21 at Noon to discuss and approve replacement member to the council.
In other business, the council awarded Bonita Reed with the Yard of Month honor for her yard along Wooddale Road. Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported to the council work was complete except for a minor adjust to the recently relocated outdoor weather siren. A circuit board will have to be sent off to be reprogrammed to be remotely triggered on and off by radio control. He also reported work is underway at Nickel Park as the basketball goals have been installed and fencing and sealing repairs are being worked on. He said the new downtown campground sites are slowly coming together as electrical and water lines are still being installed.
The American Queen visited Brandenburg for the day on Friday (7/7) and several tours were given by local residents along with trips to the Clermont distilleries and other local attractions. Another visit is expected on July 18 with several other visits expected over the next few months ahead.
Mayor Ronnie Joyner updated the council that the follow-up work is progressing on the City Hall renovation project which included a plan for a digital outdoor message sign. Provisions were made a few years during the remodeling of the city hall facility but the funds were not available to finish that part of the plan. Mayor Joyner said the city will have a three by eight foot digital marquee that will allow any messages or pictures to placed on the sign. He said that the sign would dim to adjust to the proper light conditions.
