Members of Meade County Fiscal Court approved a measure aimed at helping ease complaints of neglected property during a special called meeting Tuesday (10/15).
After months of discussions, work sessions and community input, magistrates heard and voted unanimously in favor of setting a County Property Maintenance ordinance. The ordinance provides guidance to handle various complaints of unkept property and abandoned property. The issue has plagued county leaders over a decade to how to fairly handle such complaints on a case by case basis.
The basic operation of the ordinance, a valid complaint must be made and the issue of the complaint will be reviewed by the proper magistrate. If no progress is made on a one-on-one approach the magistrate will bring the issue to the body of fiscal court to discuss and take action on how to proceed. Even with a unanimous vote, some magistrates still voice some concerns on some corners of the ordinance but agree that something has to be implemented in order to assist neighbors to neglected property.
In other business, the court received information from Melissa Phillips of Smoke Free Meade County, who provided information about the effort to improve air quality in public spaces and work places through out the county. Magistrates will further review the information before taking any action. David Pace asked the court to consider a reappointment to the Industrial Authority which will be acted upon during the November regular meeting. He also updated the situation with Consolidated Grain and Barge relocation efforts. He said after showing them several sites in the county, they rejected a favorable site due to size. Local leaders have asked CGB to provide the three sites within the county that they would find favorable to relocate to.
Judge Executive Gerry Lynn presented and read a resolution related to the bonding options of $1.7 Billion for the Nucor Brandenburg. The court approved the resolution which would work local and state leaders to setup bonding in the amount $1.7 billion for the incentives package through a industrial bond program. The action would not reflect negatively on the county’s bonding rates.
County leaders set Halloween Trick or Treat hours from 5 until 8:30 pm on October 31. They also approved the use of voting machines and election fees for the upcoming general election which cost the county an estimated $14,000. Magistrates discussed and approved a new engine replacement at a cost of $22,903 for the cardboard truck at the Solid Waste and Recycling Center. They also deemed three trucks as surplus property and a graduated fee increase for Shingle drop-off.
Magistrates met in a thirty minute closed session for the purpose to discuss personnel. The court returned and approved the resignation of Cody Pike from the Solid Waste and Recycling Center.
