
Members of the Brandenburg City Council received an update on the progress of the Nucor Steel plant during their regular meeting Monday (12/14) night.
Johnny Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Nucor Brandenburg, gave a detailed presentation on the project and gave updates on hiring for the facility. He said currently the plant had 42 Nucor employees and about 250 construction workers on site and he expects the first round of production employees will be hired after the first of the year. He said the plant is is expected to be completed in late 2022. The production employees will have a period of extensive training and candidates don’t have to have a manufacturing background. Jacobs said the main requirements of potential candidates to be hired must possess a strong work ethic, a team player attitude and optimism spirit. About 350 workers are expected to be hired at the new steel mill from the regional, with an additional 3,040 jobs will be created across the state to support the facility in various career fields. The construction phase of the site is progressing as the receiving and administration buildings are developing in the first phase of the project.
In other business, the council heard and approved the first reading of an amendment to the sign ordinance and a resolution for a facilities plan for the waste water treatment plant. Mayor Ronnie Joyner reported to the council that a upcoming meeting related to the to new waste water treatment plant should result in the design to be about 90% complete and could allow the bidding processes to begin on the project. The bonds for the project are expected to be sold in January.
Mayor Joyner also reported utility relocation would begin soon along Main Street as part of the side walk project. The main work on the side walks is expected in the spring once the utility work has been completed.
After the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Joyner gave the oath of office to council members recently elected into office during the recent election process. Their terms begin on January 1, 2021.
