
The Brandenburg City Council approved entering Brandenburg Police into hazardous duty retirement during their regular meeting Monday (7/12) night.
The vote was unanimous by the council which ends several weeks of debate on the issue which introduced during a budget workshop in May. The council entered the program in order to enhance recruitment and retain officers for the department which is vital as the city expects additional growth. Police Chief Brian Hagg told the council during a previous meeting, that once the city enters the program, it is not able to withdraw from unless the city abolishes the sworn police positions that are included in the program. The application will be submitted to Frankfort to enter the department officers into the city and their benefits would begin on October 1, 2021.
In other business, the council heard and approved a audit presentation by Dan Drane of Drane & Company of the city’s finances. The report was considered a clean audit of the city’s records. The council a heard and approved a resolution for Main Street to become a city maintained street. Currently the .028 of a mile section or road is owned by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and must comply with the state standards for improvements. Currently, a a sidewalk renovation project is about to begin with bids on the project to be opened on Wednesday (7/13). Mayor Ronnie Joyner said that the state has wanted to give the city Main Street for a while. He said the state is willing to complete the sidewalk project and resurface the street before ownership is transferred to the city.
Police Brian Hagg reported the hiring of Steve Yocom to the city department. Officer Yocom brings 20 years of experience to the department and has previously worked at the Meade County Sheriff’s Department and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Public Works Director T.J. Hughes reported that the new playground equipment and river view swings have been installed in the Riverfront Park.
