Events are already being booked for the renovated Kentucky International Convention Center even before construction work begins. Governor Steve Beshear led state and local officials Tuesday in unveiling designs for the $180 million renovation project set to begin in August 2016. The sprawling convention center spanning a couple of downtown city blocks will close for two years during the work. The redesigned convention center is expected to greatly strengthen Louisville's pitch in luring conventions and conferences. Beshear says 21 events have already been booked in the renovated facility from August 2018 through July 2023. Many are new events for Louisville or conventions that are returning only because of the new extra space at the convention center. Students Sent To Hospital After Buses Collision
A school official says 13 students in Shelby County have been taken to a hospital after two buses crashed near a high school. Ryan Allan, who is the spokesman for Shelby County Public Schools, told media that the crash happened Tuesday morning near the entrance to Shelby County High School when there was confusion about which bus had the right of way. Allan said both buses were travelling at a low speed when they collided. One bus was empty except for the driver. The other was carrying about 20 students to the Area Technology Center. Police Investigate Stabbing
Police are investigating the stabbing of a Brandenburg man over the weekend. According to Jason Graham, Chief Deputy of the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, said that the stabbing happened around 7:30 Saturday night at a residence at 259 Seminole Trail. Brian Adams, 42 of Brandenburg went to the residence to pick up his juvenile daughter from his estranged wife, who was not at home at the time of his arrival. When his estranged wife, 41 year-old Clorisa Adams and their daughter arrived, they were being driven by a male subject. According to witnesses at the scene, the man identified as 44 year-old Brian Evans of New Albany, Indiana exited the car and began to hit Adams with his fists. During the confrontation, Evans stabbed Adams in the abdomen with his pocket knife. The assault ended and 911 was called, resulting in Brian Adams being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital for treatment. Clorisa Adams was placed under arrest for menacing, and disorderly conduct, and endangering the welfare of a minor. Brian Evans was placed under arrest for wanton endangerment, driving under the influence and possession of open alcohol container. Both were lodged in the Meade County Detention Center. Two Sent To Hospital
A single vehicle accident sent two people to the hospital after their vehicle overturned. According to the Brandenburg Police Department, the accident happened around 8 am Saturday in the 2700 block of the Bypass in Brandenburg. A southbound 1996 Ford Aspire driven by 23 year-old Charles Skaggs of Brandenburg, when a vehicle pulled out from a driveway into his path causing Skaggs to over correct his steering and caused the car to overturn. Skaggs and his passenger 21 year-old Bobbi Pendleton of Brandenburg were taken to University of Louisville Hospital by Meade County EMS and Air Methods Air Ambulance for their injuries. Hospital medical staff discovered a bag of suspect marijuana from Skaggs’ pants pocket as they checked for identification. The investigation remains ongoing in the case. … [Read more...]
Council Sets Tax Rates
The Muldraugh City Council met during a special called meeting Monday evening for the purpose of setting the tax rates for the upcoming year. With all council members present except Councilman Cory Dresel, the council unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance which sets the tax rate for real property at .1810 cents per $100 of assessed value; .2262 cents per $100 of assessed value for personal property; and 15.302 cents per $100 of assessed value for motor vehicles. Student Killed By Bus
A kindergartner student was killed after exiting a Butler County School bus Monday afternoon. According to Kentucky State Police, 5 year-old Jaden Hawkins had just gotten off the bus at his grandmother's house, near the intersection of highway 70 and Provo Road, and was struck by the bus as it was pulling away. Police haven't released any more details about what caused the accident or the sequence of events at this point. Police said the driver of the bus was 54 year-old Janine Dockery of Morgantown. According to a statement from the Butler County School District, Dockery has been a full time employee for nearly 18 years and has an exemplary driving record with the district. All of the students on the bus were taken up the road to a nearby church to be picked up by their parents. The school bus has been confiscated for investigation. Counselors will be available to meet with students as needed. The accident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police and the Butler County Sheriff’s Department. Killing Plot Suspect Trial Date Set
A judge has set a 2016 trial date for a western Kentucky man charged with plotting the killing of his family and an acquaintance. Prosecutors say Ryan Champion plotted the deaths of his parents and sister with another man, but then Champion shot that man to death after he carried out the plot. All four died of gunshot wounds at the Champion family home in Cadiz. A judge set a trial date for August 15 in Trigg County Circuit Court. Champion is charged with three counts of complicity to murder on allegations he worked with 22-year-old Vito Riservato to kill Lindsey and Joy Champion and their daughter, Emily Champion, on October 26. UK Receives Injury Research Grant
University of Kentucky researchers have won a nearly $4.2 million grant to look for ways to prevent training injuries among elite U.S. military members. UK officials said Monday the Defense Department grant will back research meant to optimize performance among members of the U.S. Special Forces. The award is the largest ever received by UK's College of Health Sciences. It coincides with the establishment of the UK Sports Science Research Institute on the UK campus in Lexington. The institute will focus on ways to prevent and treat sports injuries and concussions. UK College of Health Sciences Dean Scott Lephart says researchers will look for ways to reduce risk factors for injuries. Kentucky State Police say 15 year old female, Hannah Schutt, was last seen Wednesday afternoon leaving her residence and walking on Bristow Road heading towards the rail road tracks. Schutt is 5’5” tall, 135 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing a green hooded sweatshirt and always wears a yellow bracelet on her right wrist. Man Arrested For Drugs At Ball Game
A Grayson County man was taken into custody on drug-related charges during Friday night’s Breckinridge County-Grayson County football game at Breckinridge County High School in Harned. According to Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Hendrick, 43-year-old Wendall R. Embry of Caneyville was arrested just before 8 p.m. Friday on a warrant out of Grayson County for flagrant non-support. Hendrick said during the arrest, Embry was found to be in possession of methamphetamine. Embry was charged with possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.
