Emergency crews in Meade County responded to several accidents Tuesday. The string of wrecks began around 8 am Tuesday when a two vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Old Ekron Road and Broadway in Brandenburg. One person was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital by Meade County EMS. The Meade County Fire Department assisted the Brandenburg Police Department at the scene. Later in the afternoon, a single vehicle accident happened around 12:45 pm in the 6500 block of Olin Road. The car had flipped onto its side resulting three people being taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown by Meade County EMS. The Meade County Fire Department assisted the Meade County Sheriff’s Department at the scene where the road was closed about an hour. Around 3:45 pm a non injury accident happened along Payneville Road where a vehicle had went off of the road into a ditch. The Payneville Fire Department and the Meade County Sheriff’s Department responded to assist with traffic. As crews were on the scene a second non- injury accident occurred near the same location. Around 4:15 pm a single vehicle injury accident happened along southbound US 31W on top of Muldraugh Hill when a vehicle ran into the ditch line. Muldraugh Police and Fire Departments along with Meade County EMS responded to the scene. One person was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital for their injuries. Around 5 pm, a two vehicle accident happened at the intersection of Highways 448 and 1638. Two occupants were taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital by Meade County EMS. The Meade County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Brandenburg Police Department, and the Meade County Fire Department. Police ask motorist to reduce their speed and increase their attention to the road during any inclement weather conditions. Convention Center To Get Upgrade
Events are already being booked for the renovated Kentucky International Convention Center even before construction work begins. Governor Steve Beshear led state and local officials Tuesday in unveiling designs for the $180 million renovation project set to begin in August 2016. The sprawling convention center spanning a couple of downtown city blocks will close for two years during the work. The redesigned convention center is expected to greatly strengthen Louisville's pitch in luring conventions and conferences. Beshear says 21 events have already been booked in the renovated facility from August 2018 through July 2023. Many are new events for Louisville or conventions that are returning only because of the new extra space at the convention center. Council Sets Tax Rates
The Muldraugh City Council met during a special called meeting Monday evening for the purpose of setting the tax rates for the upcoming year. With all council members present except Councilman Cory Dresel, the council unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance which sets the tax rate for real property at .1810 cents per $100 of assessed value; .2262 cents per $100 of assessed value for personal property; and 15.302 cents per $100 of assessed value for motor vehicles. Police Turn Up Heat On Drug Pushers
Police in Harrison County, Indiana is working to turn up the pressure on drug dealers. Harrison County Sheriff's deputies took park in Operation Heat Tuesday morning, targeting a couple dozen people. Chief Deputy Daran Hodges said twenty-four people were targeted in unrelated cases; seventeen were arrested for selling heroin, meth and prescription pills. Operation Heat is the latest success of a four-year effort to clean the county of drugs. Hodges said that the deputies are going to continue to pursue others on the list until they are found. Hodges said many of these investigations started because of tips called in by people who live in Harrison County. He promised to investigate all the tips the Sheriff's Department receives. Accident Leads To Woman’s Arrest
An accident led to the arrest of Brandenburg woman Monday night. According to the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, the two vehicle accident happened around 5:30 pm Monday evening (9/21) at the intersection of Kentucky 144 and 1238 in Garrett. A 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 49 year-old Shanadean Garcia of Brandenburg was traveling west on Kentucky 1238 and ran the stop sign and collided with a northbound 2001 Nissan Pathfinder driven by 28 year-old Megan Owens of Vine Grove. Owens told police that she thought Garcia was going to slow down to a stop but didn’t. Garcia told the investigating officer that she thought she had the right of way. Owens was treated at the scene by Meade County EMS and was taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown for her injuries. Garcia admitted to consuming two Alprazolam’s before operating the vehicle. She was not able to provide proof of insurance. She was charged with disregarding a stop sign; leaving the scene of a accident- failure to render aid or assistance; an operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol, third offense. Woman Injured In Accident
A single vehicle accident sent one person to the hospital. According to the Meade County Sheriff’s Department, the accident happened around 4:45 pm Friday (9/18) in the 6300 block of Midway Road known as Kentucky 1239 about 2 miles South of Payneville. A 1993 Ford Ranger, driven by 18 year-old Tanya Scott of Payneville, was traveling north and using her cellphone causing her to drop off of the shoulder of the road. Scott over corrected her steering and overturned several times and hit a fence. Scott was treated at the scene by Meade County EMS and then was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital for her injuries. Arson Determined In Fatal Fire
Authorities say a deadly fire at an apartment building in the city's Old Louisville neighborhood has been ruled arson. Officials confirmed Monday that the cause of the fire on July 2 was arson. Authorities say Flo Filatreau and Theresa Shultz, who lived inside the building, were killed in the fire. Another resident, John Bullock, died days later. Officials say the deaths are now being investigated as homicides. Major Henry Ott, who has since retired from the Louisville Fire Department, said in July that the fire started in the first floor hallway area and spread upward. Grimes Announces Electronic Voter Registration
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will make an announcement about the state's electronic voter registration system on Tuesday. A legislative panel approved a new state regulation earlier this year allowing Kentuckians to register to vote online. Kentucky already allows people living overseas, including those serving in the military, to register to vote online. The National Conference of State Legislatures says 23 states allow voters to register to vote online while another five plus the District of Columbia have not yet implemented their systems. The State Board of Elections says it will cost about $45,000 to implement the electronic voter registration system, with the money coming from the federal Help America Vote Fund. HMH Opens New PT Services
Meade County residents now have a local facility where they can seek rehabilitative treatment for a variety of ailments. Hardin Memorial Health has opened the doors to its newest Therapy & Sports Medicine facility located within the Brandenburg Diagnostic Center. HMH Physical Therapist Kayla Stull, a Meade County native, will be the main therapist at the location and she is excited to provide therapeutic services to patients in her hometown. Stull is from Brandenburg and received her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Bellarmine University. Brandenburg is the fourth Therapy & Sports Medicine location. The other locations are in Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Bardstown and the new facility will be located within the HMH Brandenburg Diagnostic Center, which offers a full range of imaging services including MRI, CT scan, routine X-Ray and Ultrasound. Clerks Issue Invalid License
Gay couples in Kentucky say altered marriage licenses issued by a county clerk are invalid and a federal judge should order her office to reissue them or put the office in receivership and have someone else do it. Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis spent five days in jail for disobeying a federal court order to issue licenses to gay couples. When she returned to work last week, she altered the license forms to say they were issued under the authority of the federal court instead of her office. Monday, lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union asked the judge to force Davis' office to reissue the licenses. Davis' lawyer Mat Staver noted Kentucky's governor said the state would recognize the altered licenses.
