Jury selection will begin Monday (11/28) for the trial of a father accused of severely beating his 4 month old son causing his death.
Daniel Cox, 36, is charged with murder after his son, Jayceon Chrystie, died at Kosair Children’s Hospital more than a year ago after authorities say he was beaten unconscious by his father and then left alone in his car seat in the driveway of his mother’s home in Radcliff on August 6, 2015.
Police have said the child was in Cox’s care when he suffered the fatal injuries.
During a court appearance earlier this year, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Teresa Logsdon said between 15 and 20 CDs and DVDs of discovery evidence were turned over to Cox’s defense team. Among the items are interviews with witnesses, medical records and autopsy photos.
A driver on U.S. 31W near Elizabethtown reportedly saw the driver of a 1998 gold Grand Marquis repeatedly slapping a child with his hand August 6, 2015, according to Cox’s arrest warrant. Police said Jayceon was in a car seat in the front passenger seat of the car driven by Cox.
Once the baby was left at his mother’s home, Cox fled, according to the warrant. He was found in Louisville about five hours after police received the first call related to the child’s injuries.
Cox was found competent to stand trial in February.
The trial is expected to last several days. If convicted, Cox faces 20 to 50 years or life in prison.
