Kmart will close all but one of its Louisville area stores this summer.
Sears Holdings, its parent company, announced 68 Kmart and 10 Sears store closings on Thursday.
Closings in the Louisville area involve four Kmart stores.
Liquidation sales will start May 12 at stores on Poplar Level Road and Taylorsville Road in Louisville, Dixie Highway in Elizabethtown, Kentucky and on Grant Line Road in New Albany, Indiana. The stores are expected to close in late July.
Sears Holdings has said it would speed up closings of unprofitable stores this year, as it struggles to compete with other brick-and-mortar and online retailers.
The company has closed other, underperforming stores and sold real estate to raise money and restore profitability in recent months.
The Kmart at 191 Outer Loop in Louisville will remain open.
The company said workers at the closing stores will be eligible for severance pay and can apply for open positions at other Kmart or Sears stores.
