A candidate for state representative was sentenced after a jury found him guilty of the charge “school official failing to report suspected child abuse.”
According to federal court, John Wayne Smith was sentenced to 90 days of home incarceration, one year of probation, fined $10,000, and ordered to pay nearly $2,500 in restitution.
This stems from an incident when Smith was charged with not reporting ex-Leitchfield police officer, Stephen E. Miller, sexually abused multiple students and threatened one of them in 2013 while Smith was an administrator at the Bluegrass Challenge Academy at Fort Knox.
Smith is currently running a campaign for state representative against incumbent Republican Representative Michael Meredith of Brownsville.
