A Radcliff man has been arrested and charged with assaulting his month-old son Saturday morning.
Justin Gregory Owens, 23, was arrested by Radcliff police after they were notified Saturday morning by officials at Hardin Memorial Hospital of a possible case of child abuse.
Owens initially told authorities, according to his arrest citation, that he had gotten up around 5 a.m. with the child in his arms to feed him when he tripped. Owens said the child struck his head on a bedroom door causing head trauma, swelling, a bleeding brain injury and fractured skull.
Owens later admitted to police, according to his citation, that he had lost his temper and struck the child on the side of the head and then placed a hand over the child’s mouth to stop him from crying and screaming.
Owens is charged with first-degree assault – domestic violence, a Class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, if convicted. The charges could be enhanced based on the condition of the child.
The child was taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.
According to Owens’ citation, two other male children, ages 5 and 3, were in the Parkside Mobile Home residence when the alleged assault occurred.
