Kentucky State Police say a shooting in Madison County that left a sheriff’s deputy wounded and an alleged gunman dead occurred when the deputy tried to stop a truck on a roadway near Berea.
Police said in a news release 51-year-old Daniel Pigg of Berea pulled into a driveway Wednesday afternoon and walked toward a house. Police say Pigg ignored Deputy Kevin Crutcher’s verbal commands, pulled out a handgun and began shooting toward the deputy. The release said Crutcher was injured and returned gunfire, fatally striking Pigg.
Pigg was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crutcher, a nine-year veteran of the sheriff’s department, was treated for a gunshot wound to the abdomen and released from the University of Kentucky Hospital.
