Saying the blood supply is at an extremely low level, the American Red Cross has issued an emergency request for donations of blood and platelets.
The Red Cross says blood donations have fallen short of the amount needed for hospitals in the past few months. In addition, the summer vacation season means many people postpone their donations because of their plans.
Tiffany Taylor, external communications manager of the Red Cross River Valley Blood Services Region, said right now blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, which is why they are making this emergency request for donations. She said it is the blood donations on the shelves that help save lives when an emergency occurs.
The Red Cross is extending hours at many donation sites to help offset the shortfall. For more information contact the American Red Cross at 502-589-4450.
