
An accident Sunday (7/17) afternoon in Breckinridge County sent 8 people to the hospital.
According to the Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Department, 30-year-old Richard Nelson, of Brandenburg, was travelling northbound on KY 259 South, about ¾ of a mile off US 60, in a 2006 Chevy Trailblazer. According to witnesses, Nelson attempted to pass several vehicles in a “no passing zone”. He veered off the road, on a crest of a hill, to avoid an oncoming vehicle, striking a utility pole before overturning onto the passenger’s side.
Richard Nelson and 7 passengers, 8-year-old Alisa Nelson, 5-year-old Abbie Nelson, 26-year-old Stephanie Nelson, 12-year-old Aiden Nelson, all of Brandenburg, 34-year old Dora Shelton, 26-year-old Mark Estes and 2-year-old Daniel Estes of Louisville were all taken to Breckinridge Memorial Hospital by Breck Central EMS.
Richard Nelson was cited for 7 counts of wanton endangerment, 2 counts of seatbelt violations, 1 booster seat violation, reckless driving and improper passing.
The Harned Fire Department assisted at the scene.
