A gun was found on a Jefferson County elementary school playground Monday evening.
A letter from Principal Ken Stites was sent to parents who have students at Norton Elementary School Tuesday addressing the incident.
The letter stated the hand gun was discovered by a neighborhood parent between 7 and 8 p.m. After the gun was discovered calls were placed to the Louisville Metro Police Department, the Jefferson County Public Schools Security office and Principal Stites.
When police arrived, officers determined the gun was “not operational, and could in no way be fired.”
Stites said police believe the gun was dropped at the playground shortly before it was discovered by the parent and was not on the playground when school was in session.
The owner and origin of the gun have not been determined.
The case remains under investigation by the Louisville Metro Police Department and the Jefferson County Public Schools Security office.
