Criminals are getting guns and individuals may be making it easier for them. With the alarming number of homicides and gun violence, police are encouraging gun owners to be responsible.
Officials say they are seeing a lot of people who are continuing to leave cars unlocked and criminals are typically looking for money, computers and purses, but they hit the jackpot when they come across a gun.
Louisville Metro Police Department say about 150 guns were reported stolen from vehicles in past year and the break-ins happen in all areas of the city.
Officials say those weapons can be either used in crimes, kids are posing with them on social media, or they can eventually shoot
themselves with them.
Police said they can also land in the hands of convicted felons and could end up in a shooting of in a homicide.
Police advise to always lock an unoccupied, especially if a gun is being left in it.
