The Scottsville Police Department is investigating after a counterfeit $50 bill was used at a Scottsville business.
Detective John Rose says they have received information that similar bills have been found in surrounding areas as well.
Rose says if you are a store clerk that comes across a counterfeit bill, to alert police, and try to hold onto the bill without putting yourself in danger.
Store clerks can use counterfeit-detecting pens to determine if the bill is fake, but for some, that may not work.
One other way to spot a possible fake, is to make sure the watermark on the bill matches the portrait printed on the cloth (For example: the $1 bill should feature Washington both on the bill and in the watermark, the $5 bill- Lincoln, the $20 bill- Jackson).
Bills that are turned into police are sent immediately to Secret Service agents.
Police are still trying to track down who may be behind passing the counterfeit bill through Scottsville.
