An Elizabethtown man was arrested early Monday and charged with abusing his child late last month.
Benjamin Grice, 32, was arrested at Kentucky State Police Post 4 headquarters after reportedly admitting to striking his daughter with a plastic baseball bat and a hand during a visitation stay December 21-24, according to an arrest citation.
Grice is charged with second-degree criminal abuse of a child less than 12, a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.
According to an arrest citation, when the child was returned to her mother after a visit, the mother noticed several bruises and scrapes on the child that she photographed. When she confronted Grice, he allegedly told her “that he whipped her on the butt with a plastic baseball bat.”
Police said the photographs also revealed a handprint on the child’s left arm and left leg and two scrapes on the child’s stomach.
The mother took the child to Hardin Memorial Hospital and authorities talked with an emergency room physician, according to the arrest report who confirmed “the injuries to the child were indicative of child abuse.”
Grice told authorities the child had “got in trouble” December 23 for hitting a younger sibling with the bat. He admitted, according to the arrest citation, that he was angry and he may have taken “disciplining too far.”
He also said the bat may have slipped from his hand when he struck the child and his hand would have caused the marks to the child’s leg.
Grice was expected to appear in Hardin District Court Monday.
