
Members of Meade County Fiscal Court heard an update on the local efforts of the Central Kentucky Community Action during their regular monthly meeting Tuesday (4/9) night.
Hal Goode, Executive Director of the non profit agency reported that agency works with several local agencies to provide various service from rural transportation, nutrition education and meals, to assistance with heating or critical services to help individuals find stable footing in life. Out of the Lincoln Trail service area, Meade County is the only office that has voucher program. Goode said that the local office has served 13,024 residents and 477 are children. He said that efforts of the agency are promoted by participation in various ways including displays and events to referrals. In other business, magistrates approved the County Clerk’s request to use both the E-slate and E-scan voting machine at each county precinct in the upcoming Primary Election. The court also approved the payment of precinct workers for the May 21. Fiscal Court approved the County Road Aide resolution and agreement with the State Transportation Cabinet.
Dave Pace, Chairman of the Industrial Authority, provided an update on the recently announced Nucor Steel facility that will be built in the Buttermilk Falls Industrial Park. Pace said that everything is on track with the process and paperwork has been signed the deal and other details continue to be worked out. He said the facility will have several specific safety and environmental teams that will be apart of the operation and Nucor’s training program has set the industry standard to develop new standards in the metal industry. Even as the design of the facility has yet to be finalized, the exhaust and other by products from the facility to be used in other parts of the over million square foot facility. Pace said the economic impact of the facility is huge as payroll breaks down to about $30 million dollars annually for the 400 employees and about another 100 or so maintenance and construction jobs that will assist the plant’s operations. Construction on the plant is expected to begin this fall with the first run of steel plates to be manufactured in 2022. Pace said other informational meetings and events will be planned as the project moves forward.
Judge Executive Gerry Lynn asked magistrates for dates to begin work on the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year. After some discussion, the court set a budget work session for Tuesday, April 23 at 7 pm. County leaders expect the first reading of the budget at the regular May meeting. Judge Executive Lynn also asked the court’s approval to change the venue of the May regular meeting to the Meade-Breck Center in Rhodelia. The court approved the request. Fiscal Court changes the venue of a couple of meeting each year to allow residents in different parts of the county to be able closer access to their county leaders.
