During his weekly press conference, Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency following the crash of UPS 2976 on Tuesday.
A state of emergency declaration allows for access of state funds for disasters.
UPS 2976 was headed to Honolulu when it crashed shortly after takeoff at 5:15 p.m. at Muhammad Ali International Airport. The plane crashed into two businesses, Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Auto Parts, creating a catastrophic explosion. Several people were killed and several others hurt. There are still some unaccounted for as the search continues.
Beshear advised those near the crash zone to avoid drinking water as a precaution, though he added air pollution levels in the area are not cause for concern.
Governor Beshear announced that there will be an emergency fund set up for Kentuckians to donate to. The fund will cover funeral expenses for those killed in the crash.
The governor explained it would be similar to previous storm disaster funds, every dollar donated will go directly to those affected. In fact,, have amended the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund to now allow families impacted by a disaster like this to also benefit from the generosity of Kentuckians.
Governor Beshear also ordered flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff through sunset on Sunday, November 9, in honor of those killed in the deadly crash of UPS 2976 at Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Flags across the commonwealth are already at half-staff in honor and remembrance of former Governor Martha Layne Collins and former Vice President Dick Cheney.
Beshear also encourages residents and businesses to join in the tributes.
